Hey Folks,

So I am creating a documentary of my fathers life, which is almost entirely interviews with him and his friends. I want to splice into my documentary (which is NOT going outside of my family, noone else would be interested) a short scene from a commercial DVD that I own that is set in the time period that Dad went to college.

The Question:
How can I capture footage from a commercial DVD for editing within iMovie?

Unrelated iMovie question:
If I have my camera hooked up to the computer, can I just capture directly to the computer hardrive and not waste miniDV Tape?

Thanks,

WT in Tejas

you would need to rip the DVD footage, then convert it into something imovie can import (vers.4) and use. Do a search here or over at versiontracker.com or macupdate.com and you're bound to find apps that do it for you.

or you could rip the DVD to remove the macrovision scrambling, then hook your DV cam to the DVD player's output. You can then very efficiently record that small disc segment to DV, then import into imovie. It's easier sometimes than fooling with the ripping apps, especially if you want a region-universal, macrovision-free disc.
You heard me! Sod off, Sadr!
