I have some old 8mm reel film that I've converted to digital video. On one portion of the film, there appears to be a double exposed segment. It lasts for about 30 seconds. During this time, there are clearly two pictures moving separate from each other. It also appears that one of the exposures is the only shot of my ancestors standing as a group in the whole 8mm film. I would love to extract the one exposure from this recording.

Is there any way to do this? The only thing I could think of is some type of software that would lock on to the moving pixels because the cameras were shaking in different directions for each exposure - thus, each exposure's pixels would shift as a whole.

Thanks.

if I understood correctly, you want a software, which is able to decides intelligently on its own, which pixel belongs to content one or two within a video frame...?
never heard of such a mighty tool - ask the guys at the NSA ;-)
ok, kiddin' - no, I won't expect such a software within the next... 10 years??

correct me if I'm wrong...

Yep, that's what I want. Obviously a computer is the only thing capable of doing what I want. Of course, it probably hasn't been invented yet. Go figure.

The only thing I can see and that's relative to how each pictures stands out on its own is using some rig removal software. Something like Mokey (around 5 000$) or Furnace a 5 000$ plug-in for Shake (Hey! here's another 5 000$). With this (and I repeat that's it's very relative. Forget it if the 2 pictures are overlaping too much) you could extract elements of the shot. That leaves you with an extracted element without a background. What it means? Weeks and weeks of fun maybe just to learn the software and a few weeks more to work something maybe aceptable. maybe, it all depends. I wish softwares like those used in shows like C.S.I. really existed.
