DVD Player with DivX playback

I bought a DVD player that is supposed to be able to play DivX videos from a CD-R/RW. I popped in a CD-R that had a bunch of .avi's into the DVD player, but the player spit the disc back out. Am I incorrect in assuming that .avi's will be read by a DVD player with DivX playback capabilities? What do I need to do? Thanks.

Make sure you burn the CD in a format your player can understand, try ISO9660. Also remove any weird characters from the filename.

You aren't confusing the divix codec with the old Dixv DVD system where you were able to buy a DVD cheaper but it would only playback like twice unless you paid more are you?

Old thing but they confussed me the first time I ran into it
Quicksilver 867, 700mhz iBook, 1st Gen iPod, iSight, Newton 2100, and a 128k Mac. All operating and used on a constant Basis

How do I choose a format?

Nah, I don't believe so.

thanks for the help so far, i will try toast in a bit. here's another question: if i have burned a cd (assume in the correct format) with a bunch of avi's, mpeg-4's, etc., and then have 1 or 2 files that the DVD player definitely will not read (let's say realplayer), will the DVD player reject the disc entirely or should it still be able to play the files it can read? in other words, can one *bad* file (non-DivX) ruin the entire CD's chances to play in a DVD player with DivX playback? thanks again.

Keep in mind that divx is not a universal standard, and there are a ton of different variations (Divx 4, Divx 5, xvid, whatever). All of these formats come in the same .avi container, so just because it is a .avi does not mean you can play them. Additionally, you might need to upgrade the firmware on your burner to add support for more codecs.

thanks, i will try toast and the firmware upgrade soon. for now, just curious: if i have a burned cd (assume in the correct format) with a bunch of readable files and 1 or 2 files that the DVD player will not read, will the DVD player reject the disc entirely or should it still be able to play the files it can read? in other words, can one *bad* file ruin the entire CD's chances to play in a DVD player with DivX playback?

Some of those DivX DVD players don't like it if you mix the movie formats (AVI, MPEG...) in the same directory. Use a folder for each format!
Then there could also be a problem with the CD/DVD brand you are burning - I once bought a 25pack of pretty nice white labeled DVDs that my Mac burns and reads just perfect but my DK-339 DVD player does not recognize!

Yes, I would definately give a shot for the DivX.com forums. Badidea gave the link to the hardware forum, but the mac forum is here: http://forums.divx.com/viewforum.php?forum=14
