I'm looking for advice in purchasing a decent video editor for the eMacs in our University lab (College of Ed lab to be specific); something a bit more demanding than iMovie, but will have a short learning curve (they have a couple of hours to do the assignment-can I help; I've heard that it's easier on a Mac, etc.). I'm not familiar with anything in particular, point me in the right direction. I apologize if this thread has been hashed & rehashed. I didn't have time to go through the archives before posting.

It's just an ordinary day and it's all your
state of mind, at the end of the day, you
just gotta say it's alright!

What's the project's specifics? If the students only have a few hours to finish the assignment, Final Cut Express may be too much to digest in only a few hours, not taking into account the time for the project, itself.
It took me more than a few hours to digest Final Cut Pro 3 (similar to FCE v.1), and I had many hours of DV editing with iMovie under my belt.
Why do you consider iMovie lacking (not saying that it won't be)? It's free and already loaded on the eMacs.

as scottiB mentioned:
FCE has a very high learning curve! it has almost the same possibilities as FCpro..
iMovie is very intuitive, you can buy cheap add-ons to handle extra special effects (as pic-in-pic), the integration with other prgs is good (importing grafix from Photoshop)...
I'm a hobbiest and enthusiastic hobby editor - I needed more then 6 month to do the upgrade from iMovie to FCE; and I'm still learning (no good tutorials in German ;-) )... I just use about 10% of the possibilities of FCE for my projects...

Thanks, guys!
Generally, the projects deal with recording their student teaching experiences & editing for class projects/program portfolios. Some class projects need the voice overs, clip splitting, etc.
For faculty members it can be that simple to prepping several clips for online streaming & what-not.
I've been using iMovie a bit (it's enough for me, anyway), but I do have the few who say it doesn't do everything that they need it to or at least with great difficulty...
So, I'm just trying to stay ahead of both parties and getting/knowing how to use what they need.
I had been looking at the the Final Cut Express, but I'm beginning to think I need to know iMovie backwards & forwards before I move up to something else...
Thanks again for the input!

how about making a "wish list"?
voice-over and clip-splitting can all be done with iMovie plus some very cheap commercial add-ons...
for your projects you don't need "Hollwood" - the best argument for iMovie is its intutiveness (english?? sorry, alien)... I mean, it is easy to use.
I would ask your students what they intend to do (and why! "I want 3D grafics!" "Me want Cube transitions!".... why?)
K.I.S.S = kepp it simple and stupid
