a friend of mine gave me a bunch of quicktime videos that have the extension ".m 1"....none of the players that i have tried (quicktime, vlc, etc.) will play them. when trying to open in quicktime, i get the message "you may experience problems blahblahblah you don't have the required compressor needed" the audio comes through but not the video. what should i do? thanks in advance

Maybe they are the demuxed sound streams (.m1a) from mpeg files instead of a video file. The video stream from an mpeg-1 file uses .m1v but you report no video. I guess you need to ask your friend just what he sent you.

Divx Doctor constantly makes mov files named ".m 1" because of a bug in the long file name handling algorithm. Open the movie in QT (ignore the warning) and report what it says in the Info window (cmd-i) under "Format."
