mpeg and iDVD

In iDVD, the program basically converts .mov and .dv to mpeg, right?

Then why can't I just use a regular mpeg file in the first place?
Is there a difference in the mpeg I try to uue and the type that iDVD converts to?

This KB article talks about the formats iDVD can handle.

Perhaps you should use QT pro to convert between formats.
