I had some cine film converted to digital format. They have been saved as mpeg2 files. I have the codec for quicktime that enables these files to be converted to a format recognised by imovie. What format can i convert them to without losing any quality? I've tried pal-dv and the files are huge. If i convert to mpg4 at high quality will there be a noticeable loss in quality?
Also imovie as i understand only copes with <2gb (9min) clips. I quess i 'll have to edit some of them with quicktime pro before importing- is this the best way?
Thanks for our help.

1. DV is going to be the best way of importing without losing quality, since the files aren't compressed. Any codec at its highest quality seeting should be a suitable workaround. The best codec really depends on the type of video you're importing.
2. When you drag your files into the iMovie project, iMovie will segment them--that's how it worked for me last year. No need to do any preprocessing on that.

what ever you work with iMovie will turn around and make them DV files to edit with. iMovie is a DV editor. Yes I know you can import other codecs but they get flipped to DV to edit with. Just convert them to DV and go from there. Yes I know the file sizes are big but not that big. 1 hour of DV footage is 12 - 13 gigs of Hard Drive space.
And DV is a compressed format. and it is a fairly hig comprssion for Broadcast standards but also very good at that compression. There is DV 25, DV 50, and DV100 ect. up to Uncommpressed. which if you really want to take up space 50 seconds of Uncommpressed takes 1 gig of Hard Drive space

mpeg2 IS a compressed format, so don't expect wonders
if you just drag 'n drop them into iM, you will loose the audio.
you need a free tool as "mpeg to streamclip" which makes them .dv AND bite them into 2Gb chunks.
