Hey, I am entering a video editing contest and the files that they gave were in WMV format. I need to get it into iMovie and I'm guessing the easiest way is to change it into an MPEG video. Does anyone have a somewhat simple way of doing this? Thanks!

I did a quick Google search. There are lots of Windows utilities to do it. You might need to borrow a PC.

wmv is a M$ owned format, on a Mac you can only playback such files, no conversion.
try to find someone with a PC - don't! convert into mpeg!! that's not meant for editing!! best would be to convert into .dv, you probably need an external fw drive… or, on dvd-r you can catch ~ 20min of dv stream

A company called Telestream is supposed to release a WMV importer/exporter for Quicktime for Mac soon for around $100 USD.

Also if the WMV is NOT version 9 then VLC can convert it into DivX or MPEG4.
Use the Advanced Output checkbox to access the settings for an output movie.

Problem here is that it is a editing contest. converting to Divx or Mpeg4 and then converting back to a DV fle so he can edit would kill the footage quality wise. There would be artifacting to no end. best bet is what someone else said already find a PC and convert directly to a DV file. Chances are it is already a DV file with the WMV codec and it shouldn't take to long. The other option is to put it on a PC with a firewire port and send it back to a MiniDV camcorder and reaquire in iMovie

Snapz Pro X2 works quite well for capturing movies playing in WMP/RealPlayer/Quicktime Player/Apple DVD Player, etc...

The controls of the application are a bit cumbersome (IMHO) but it usually does a great job of grabbing video and audio.
It's kinda pricey at $79US for the version with movie capture.
