I took a class in reason and I'm familiar with running the basics of that application. I was planning on buying it until I saw that Apple came out with Logic pro 7.

My question is will logic do everything that reason will do? perhaps even better? If so, i'm willing to go with logic mainly because Apple usually owns the software market when it comes to clean effective user interfaces.

I like what reason can do but i'm not a fan of the interface. i've seen snapshots of logic and it looks very slick in an os x kind of way. if it's just as powerful as reason, i'll buy it instead.

Whhooff.

You are the first person I have ever, ever heard of who wants to switch to Logic for the user interface. You've also never used Logic, apparently.

"slick, in an OS X way", it is not. I haven't seen Logic 7 yet - and I'm sure that Apple is finally streamlining the interface - but everything prior is a monster. Necessarily so, mind you: The interface complexity follows from the fact that Logic can do just about anything that *can* be done.

Reason's interface is based on a hardware studio (what with 19" racks and so; it's actually very effective), and its approach is geared towards creation of slightly lame-sounding, loop-based music. It's very powerful for doing that, but if you're going to be doing any audio tracking, you're going to need a hard-disk recording platform such as Logic or Cubase or Digital Performer.

Friends of mine produce the basic tracks in Reason and run them into Logic via Rewire, where they add real instruments and vocals.

With the addition of a decent drum machine to Logic Pro 7, the possibilities have increased, but if you primarily wish to do loop-based electronic music and are content to work with virtual instruments via MIDI, Reason is probably your best solution.

what spheric harlot says, above.

i use reason to make music, logic for vocals. rewire works well (1.33g powerbook).

logic is capable of doing music, beats, all of it.
but reason is easy, fun, and (pun intended) logical.

both have value. still, go to a music store (or apple store) and check out logic up close, then you can decide.

have fun!
