i'm converting some old vhs-c tapes to mini-dv so that i can then import it into my computer. is there a way i can import it directly to my computer so that i can save myself a step using iMovie or anything FREE? right now i have to play it from my vhs-c camcorder into my mini-dv camcorder and record it onto a dv tape, then import it into imovie from the mini-dv. so a half hour tape would take a total of an hour to get it to my comp which isn't bad but i have a LOT of tapes to convert.
i'm using a sony mini dv camcorder that allows me to playthrough video so i can convert old tapes to dv and i can also hook it up to my computer at the same time via firewire but in iMovie, it'll just recognize if theres a tape in the sony. when i play a tape from the vhs-c camcorder i can see it in my mini-dv camcorder but it won't show up in imovie.
any advise is appreciated, thanks

You should be able to play through the DV camcorder with out any problem and not have to record to tape. What you are trying to do is a fairly common setup on Mini DV camcorders.

i can play it through and capture it on the camcorder no prob but in imovie it'll just show a blue screen saying theres no tape (or something like that, can't remember exactly) should i just leave a blank mini dv tape inside the camcorder? i know that if there was a tape in it and i push the import button in imovie, it plays the tape thats in the camcorder.
i'm new to the dv game so any help is welcome

Aric:
Some cameras have a play-thru feature that allows video to get into imovie right thru the camera. My sony does it, and an Elura did as well.
Check your camera's manual to see if this feature has to be switched on.
It may be called e to e or E/E, depending on the band.
Good luck!

I'm trying to do the same as you are, only I have had no luck, not even with capturing to DV cam. I also work with a Sony DV Cam, please tell me what you did to succeed ! Thanks.

which model do you have? are you sure it's capable of doing analog-to-digital conversions? if so, it's in the manual, i'm at work right now so i can't remember exactly how it goes but i can check later if you need the info still.

I have a Sony DCR-PC120E. I'm pretty sure it can do conversions, but not 100%. I think I read it in the manual. Can't check right now (also at work ) I just don't get anything out of it. Thanks for the info.

I have a Sony Digital-8 camera thats a few years old now. I have to leave the tape out for it to function as a pass through analog to digital converter. Turn the camera on VCR mode.

Some, but not all of the Sony digital camcorders offer pass-through from the analog inputs to DV. I've heard various things, but generally the oldest models (first generation models, such as my camcorder, the TRV310) do not offer pass-through to DV. The next generation of this model line, the TRV320 does in fact offer pass-through. I just did a few google searches and found out more than I could ever want to know about it. Hope this helps!
