I just bought a Samsung 60GB (2.5" 5400 RPM Notebook Hard Drive, Average Seek Time: 12ms) to use in an external bus-powered mini-enclosure. This is to replace a 3.5" Western Digital POS that just failed on me.

I've just tried some iMovie 3 editing, and its stuttering so bad on the export to camera, I want to send it to the therapist. I've done my search in the forums and it seems that even your 4200 rpm drives are ok for DV work. The bus is 400mb/s on a Pismo 500. Firewire natch.

What software can I use to check the speed of the disk?

oh, and what benchmark do I compare it against? heh.

Transfer a large file (several GB) and time it.

Nominally, FW 400 should be around 32MB/sec. One enclosure I have gets around 10MB/sec (despite sporting an Oxford 911 chipset), which makes it bloody useless.

Stay away from "Momobay" - cheap AND crappy.
