Apple Lossless for > 16/44.1 recordings

Can Apple Lossless be used on 24/96 recordings etc? I tried on a test file and ALE truncated it to 16bit, but that might have been due to the file itself being 'quirky'

Anyone tried applying ALE to a 24/96 PCM file?
