importing a quicktime movie into imovie

im trying to compile a large imovie project from a few smaller quicktime movies. i can get the video to import by exporting the quicktime movie to dv stream first but the audio doesn't transfer over. how do i get either the audio to come with it or extract the audio as an mp3 or something so i can add it seperately and play it in sync with the video.

there are no quicktime movies, .mov is just a container, containing (sic!) all kind of file formats.

when you open your .mov, press apple_i - what does it say about the video?
let me guess: mpg.
or mpg2

QTpro is not able to convert that into another, editable format (mpgs are just meant for playback)
