I just purchased a GO-VIDEO VCR/DVD R/RW burner combo unit and using a Teon DVD-R 8X DVD, I successfully recorded from a VHS tape to the DVD. I replayed the DVD on the machine and it played back fine. I go to put it into my G4 Powermac with the combo drive and it takes it in, nothing happens, adn then about 30 seconds later the bay drive opens up. NOTHING. Any suggestions on what I can do here? Is there any way to see if the disc is being recognized?
Thanks,
Tom

Some older macs (like my g4) have a dvd drive that will not recognize -R dvds. In Utilities there is a file named System Profiler that should be run. It will tell you what brand and model of dvd is installed. You can look up that particular model somewhere on the internet (use google) or post that information here and someone may be able to confirm that that is the problem. sam

Thanks for the imput, I'll check that out. I found out that the problem was that I didn't finalize the recording. I put the DVD back in the recorder, followed the directions (duh!), and it played fine on the Mac.
Now the question is, how do I import the DVD into the Mac so I can edit it, and then burn it to a new DVD using iDVD? I don't have a Superdrive yet, but should that matter? I do have iDVD, and I verified that the DVD will play on the computer.
Thanks for the extra help!
Tom

DVDs use a file format called mpeg2, which is meant as a playback-only format. if you want to edit such files, you need to convert it first.
therefor you need the Apple mpeg2 playback plug-in (here:20$, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/mpeg2playback/) and a free software called mpeg2streamclip (here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macos...treamclip.html)
be sure to select "segment", otherwise iM is not able to import correctly
btw: if your Mac hasn't a superdrive, how come iDVD is installed??? (normally, the installer "senses" the hardware - no superdrive = no iDVD)
and: without a dvd-burner (=superdrive) you cannot burn dvd; or, iDVD doesn't support external dvd-drives, in case you want to buy such…
hope I could help…

the iLife version of iDVD will install without a superdrive in place.
