This is a really basic question, but one that I have not seen answered anywhere.

Is it possible to import dv at faster than real time?

At the moment, my place of employ has an old camcorder that can output video in real time. Do modern firewire-equipped cameras (I am looking at the Sony Handycam DCR-HC40 in particular) export video to the computer any faster?

Thanks,
BannanaFiend

As a rule no. There are a couple of panasonic pro decks that can import DV,DVcam and DVCpor at 4x speed but they are expensive pro line decks
Quicksilver 867, 700mhz iBook, 1st Gen iPod, iSight, Newton 2100, and a 128k Mac. All operating and used on a constant Basis

there are some "harddisk recorder" on the market (sorry, right now no links), you can connect a camera to the recorder and it records direct to disc. later, you can use this material direct for editing (via firewire).

again, very expansive…
