Much of a Canon fan as I am, avoid a Canon camcorder. There are too many reports of the tape drives in their consumer models failing.

I'd look at the Sony lineup... I own a TRV-38 that I bought last year. It's been a very solid, nice consumer camera for me, and I think that it makes good pictures, considering it's only 1 CCD. Honestly, as far as camcorders go, there's Sony and Canon, and then the rest of the crap that's out there. Anything under 1,000, I'd lean Sony... if, for some reason, circumstances change, and you feel you need a prosumer 3-chip, $2,000 camera, then you could probably think about Canon, as well.

Do a Google search for Camcorder reviews, and you will find a lot of stuff.

Couple little camcorder things to think about:

Whatever you do, buy one of those little $10 UV filters to go on top of your lens. If you scratch that, no big deal... scratch your lens, that *is* a big deal.

On any consumer camcorder, the audio from the built it camera mic is going to suck - if getting decent audio is important to you, consider getting yourself a little shotgun mic.

Consider getting yourself a big honkin' extra battery, like a Power2000. I can tell you, it's no fun to shoot for 30-40 minutes and then have the battery light go on. That happened to me the first time I shot with my camera. The next day I ordered the biggest battery I could find.

B & H Photo Video in NY is a great place to buy stuff from (no, I don't work for them... but I bought my video camera, and my digital still camera from them)... you will save yourself a bit of $$$ (as opposed to going to an electronics store).

Good luck!
