DVR w/Firewire to Laptop?

Hi. I just got DVR installed through Comcast. The back of the unit has 2 firewire ports. I have an iBook with firewire that I'd like to move recorded shows onto. However, when merely hooking up the two components via firewire, no drive mounts in the Finder. Does anyone know if there is a way for me to move video from the DVR (Motorola, FWIW) to the iBook?

iBook G3: 700 MHz, 12'', 30 GB, 640 RAM, AP
iPod 2G 20GB
