Does anyone know whether dvd-r is compatible with Sharp dvd-vcr combo?
I burnt a dvd using i-dvd (I think i-dvd 4) worked on my Sony dvd player but not on my Sharp dvd-vcr combo.
I am in Australia and we use Pal here not NTSC, but I'm pretty sure I set the i-dvd up as Pal before I started the project.

Not sure if this could be your problem or not, but here goes.
I have had an on-going problem with any media except Sony. I have tried Verbatim and Memorex DVD-R media, but it only occasionally plays in my DVD player. For some reason Sony media appears to always work.
So, what brand media are you burning? That could be the issue.

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the person who replied to me. After your message I went out and bought some Sony dvd-r media. I've only just got around to using them this week which is why it has taken me a while to reply. Anyway I burned the exact same idvd project onto the Sony dvd-r media and it worked on both my sony and sharp dvd players. So thanks muchly, you saved my bacon. Will continue to buy the sony dvd-r media.
My boyfriend works in electronics and is always rabbiting on about sony being the best, and how he won't buy anything else, but I thought for a small item like dvd-r media any brand would be fine, but looks like he is right.
By the way between the time I posted this forum and receiving your message I bought some apple dvd-rs (i think made by pioneer) haven't used them as yet, as after getting your message and went out and bough the sony ones. When I get around to using the apple ones will let you know re my success rate.

Just google "DVD-R playback compatibility". There are websites that attempt to compile as much compatibility data as possible.
In theory, every player should be able to play DVD-R and DVD+R (but not -/+RW discs). In reality, it's about maybe 95% compatibility for DVD-R, something like 90% for DVD+R.

bonniescotland,
glad to help. I haven't heard too much about the type of media being used on this forum. I'd actually like to hear if anyone is using Ritek or some other generic media, and having good results playing it back on their DVD player (not computer!).
I HAVE heard from folks saying that the Apple branded media is top notch. You shouldn't have any problems with it. (It is just a little pricey, even compared to the Sony media.)

I've used iDVD 4 and 5 with Apple and Verbatim blank DVD-R media with very little problem and so far no reports of anyone not being able to play them back on their home DVD players (admittedly not a big population sample).
Apple success rate on burning = 100%
Verbation " " " " = ~95% (I can't remember any that failed but I'm sure a few did).
But the point of this whole thread is that just like anything else in life (except death and taxes as they say), there is no guarantee. Once you find something that works for you, use it and enjoy!
