I'm not sure why this has never come up before, but I'm having an awful time with audio in my DV footage. I recently got a Canon XL2 through a grant, and while the camera is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever touched, it was also a fairly large step up in terms of complexity. I'm dealing with it pretty well, but I've had some audio trouble. The audio I shoot is never synced with video. It either plays too fast ala the chipmunks, with gaps to bring the time back down, or it plays way slowed down and just skips parts to catch up. I see this behavior in both Final Cut Express and iMovie.

So, any thoughts on how to fix this? I'm sort of assuming it's a sample rate proble, though I'm willing to hear any other suggestions. I have access to Final Cut Pro HD, so do I just need to use that? Express seems to meet my editing needs, so I haven't really felt the need to move up that much. And if it is a sample rate problem, I'm sure I can fix that on the camera for the future, but is there anything to be done with the footage I already have?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide. This will certainly teach me not to switch cameras in the middle of a project with a deadline looming. But then again, could any of you really resist this? Seriously, I would marry this thing if camcorder and man were allowed to mate.

Don't know if anyone cares, but I was able to solve the problem by installing FC Pro and setting my capture audio to 32k. It seems that FC Express only imports at 48k, regardless of the state of the footage.
