I only know a little about digital video work. I am aware of the basic different formats.

I have a G4 12" iBook w/ ComboDrive (wife's spending limit nixed the SuperDrive).

If I have some .mov, .mpg, and/or .avi files on my iBook, what's the best way to get them on a VCD or SVCD?

What if anything do I need to encode or process the files first?

What should I use to burn the files to a valid VCD/SVCD so that I can play them in my TV DVD player?

I looked around videohelp and macupdate, I see that there's a whole bunch of different apps, but it's a little overwhelming for a newbie.

As usual freeware preferred. :-)

All advice appreciated, thanks very much in advance!

Toast Titanium has a feature to burn VCDs. With Toast there is an application that works with iMovie to make a file that can be burnt to VCD.

Import the file into iMovie after installing Toast. There will be a new option in the "Share" dropdown to make a file for VCD. The doco for the process is in Toast.

Hope this helps.

I second the suggestion for Toast. I make DVDs very easily all the time with Toast. It's a drag-and-drop then pressing Record.

If you have a DVD player why not make DVDs?

Not all of us have superdrives just yet.
