So I feel entirely stupid not being able to figure this out, but for the life of me I can not find a way to make a divx (or xvid or matroksa) .avi file from a file I already have without resorting to a PC. All the encoding tools I have will only use the divx-ish codecs under the mov file format.

My reasoning is that I have a device that will only play .avi wrapped files. I have found several ways to us a DVD as the source, but not from an already existing mov or mp4 file.

Is there something I'm missing? Will I have to keep a PC on hand just for this? Any advice at all would be wildly appreciated.

Download and install this free codec to enable quicktime to save as .divx.

Note: 3ivx and DivX are not the same thing. You will not be able to export to an avi file if you install 3ivx.

If you install the DivX codec you will be able to export to DivX video in an avi file, but the free version doesn't allow export using MP3.

ffmpegX can convert from and to a lot of formats, and you can try it without restrictions. It also gives the option of video and audio passthrough, so if you have a .mp4 file that you want as a DivX avi file, you can set the video to passthrough and audio to MP3 and then change the fourcc on the avi file to DIVX. Since DivX is based on MPEG-4, hardware DivX players will play most MPEG-4 video if it has the DivX fourcc.

Sorry. My mistake about the 3ivx codec. Here is a nice summary of video apps and what they each do.

ffmpegx was exactly what I was looking for, thanks. I actually already had it, I just was mixing it up in my mind with forty-two.

Thanks guys.

If you want it easier than ffmpegX and totally free, then you should take a look at HandBrake!

edit: forget it - I missed that you don't want to convert a DVD and HandBrake is DVD only...

check D-Vision instead!
