I have a home-brewed (non-commercial) DVD that I need to import to iMovie. Do I need a separate video-capture device, or is there a software solution, assuming the DVD is totally uncrypted but it's in DVD-video format (not MPEGs or MWV files that happened to be burned on a DVD)?

iMovie only works with DV, so you need to convert the video to DV.

... and do I need an external video capture device (like the Plextor ConvertX for Mac) in order to do this on my iBook even though the DVD is already in some kind of digital format?

MPEG Streamclip will do this, but I think you have to have the QT MP2 component. MPEG Streamclip is free from versiontracker.com

DVDxDV will do this with extremely nice quality for only about $25. The same price as the QT MPEG-2 component. It will also break the files up into 2gb chunks, which is nice if you're using pre-HD versions of iMovie.
