I would not recommend this camcorder for use with a Mac.

1. No Firewire.
2. MPEG-2 recording format.

You will have to jump through hoops to get the files into your Mac and then they aren't in a format suitable for editing.

hmm..really? Isnt HDV in Long-GOP MPEG2? and doesnt Final Cut Pro HD natively capture HDV? If MPEG2 is incompatable w/ Mac, then I am seriously missing something here!

the lack of firewire is quite disconcerting however. To me thats unheard of...

On the plus side, the native 16:9 aspect ratio is nice.

however for that kind of money i say just go ahead and get a Panny DVX100 or 100A. The 100A is pretty compact, and delivers well although it doesnt have the 16:9 aspect ratio natively...

I think Samsung has a combination still digital camera & digital camcorder hybrid if that's the hybrid you meant.

Otherwise, if you mean a tapeless camcorder, my guess is that we are two years away from a tapeless consumer videocamera that will do everything we expect from today's sub-$1,000 consumer mini DV camcorders.

[Sorry if this is digging up an old thread, or

While MPEG2 is not the *best* for editing, it is a decent format, it's a good quality and it takes less hard disc space, I don't think that anybody doing anything that's less than for braodcast will really take notice to it.

Plus, final cut is a nondestructive nonlinear editor, and if I remember correctly, rebuilds everything when you render and export anyway. Shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Also, no firewire won't be a deal either, you'll plug the cam in via USB2, or usb1.1 if your mac is older, mount the drive on your desktop, and copy the files to your hard disc. I would honestly much-prefer this to the capturing shenanigans I've had when using VHS and MiniDV camcorders.

Would I spend my own money on the Everio? [a month or so later], probably not, with the new things with larger discs coming just soon, but those are not 3-ccd.

If you like the size, are okay with just one hour of record time, and can afford it, then I'd say to go for it.
