I have just ripped my first DVD to AVI, i normlly keep them in the VOB format but i was having issues with 1 or 2 for some reason, but they worked in AVI

2 Questions, first:

Using Handbrake, in the audio section, language 1 MP3 (ch5) - Does ch5 mean 5.1 surround sound? i am just curious as i dont have surround sound as yet, but just wondering when i do, if these AVI's will be 5.1 ready (they currently play steeo on my TV)

Second:

whats the difference between the encoder options, what do you advise?

FFMPEG
XVID

Mnay Thanks

Just remembered anohter, what is " 2-pass encoding"? should i use this?

It think Handbrake will rip the 5.1, but mix it down to two channels. I don't think it supports 5.1 for playback (I could be wrong here).

With FFMPEG and XVID, it's just the encoder doing the leg work. For most people it's a flip of a coin (both have their advocates and detractors), but some playback methods prefer one over the other.

2 Pass encoding will increase your quality and nearly doubles the amount of time it takes to convert.
