I picked up a monitor to keep track of video edits and graphics. I have it connected through an S video cable to my camera, which is easy enough.

I'd like to set it up so that it will mirror video from my desktop as well though. For instance if I'm compositing and want to have a preview on the monitor before I kick it to tape.

What's the easiest way to do this? My G5's ATI Radeon 9600 XT has 2 digital outs but no other plugs ( like this other ATI's hand S video output).

Is there some straight forward way I can set it up without spending hundreds? This my first time expanding my video set up at home so please be patient with the newb factor.

Ah! Handy.

So let's say if when I'm in Final Cut, is there a way to have just the canvas appear full screen on the monitor (maybe via a menu command) or do I just have to stretch it out so that nothing else is showing?

hmm. Well I am fairly sure that Sony Vegas has the ability to fullscreen preview on external monitor, and I'm damned if Vegas beat FCP to that feature... Go ahead and look for it in that huge ol' set of instruction manuals, it oughta be in there somewhere!

I'm not sure if you've already done this, but if you have your camera hooked up through firewire to the Mac and the camera hooked up to the monitor through S-Video, you already have everything you need. Just make sure your camera is set to play through and set your preview (it's under the view menu, but the exact placement differs for different versions of Final Cut) to NTSC Firewire and it should do exactly what you want.

AH!

You sir win the prize! Thanks so much. I thought I would have to have 2 s video inputs and just bought like $50 worth of wires and a little switch to try and accomodate it all.

Looks like I'll be returning that stuff! Haha. Thanks again, that IS exactly what I was looking to do.
