Trouble w/ iMovie HD

I am trying to import some AVI files into an iMovie project, but everytime the import is complete (the progress bar is at 100%) iMovie freezes and I have to force quit. When I restart iMovie the imported clip appears in iMovie's trash, from whence I can move it into the movie timeline. I really would rather not do this for EVERY single clip I have--does anyone have any ideas about this? The clips I am importing are ~75 MB, but I've been using iMovie for a while now importing 750 MB clips and it didn't give me this problem.

The same thing happens to me importing a one hour uncompressed file (106GB). It imports ok, but hangs at the end until I force quit and relaunch. iMovie HD 5.0.2
