If you have something that will create a disk image, you can then burn this directly using the Apple disk utility. For example, you mention "compressing". If you're using DVD2oneX to do this, it has the ability to create a disk image of the fininshed product.
Beware of bargin burn programs - Dragon Burn especially. I was once too cheap to pay for Toast, so I got Dragon Burn instead. It was a total POS. Every disk it burned was full of dropouts, freezes, etc.
If you do much burning, you really will want Toast, and the sooner you get it the easier this all will be. Keep your eyes open. They have been known run unadvertised online specials where you can get Toast 6 for something like $50.
