I'm looking for an external drive that is at least 500 gigs? Does anybody know of any good models to choose from?

I wouldn't trust a single drive that size, ever. If you're gonna go that route, go RAID. There's no efficient / feasible way to backup 500gb, so if your drive goes bad, you just wasted 500GB of data...

No, 25 hours of video depositions including scanned versions of written depositions. I'm not sure what format the scanned depositions are in yet so I know that I have to figure that into the equation. 25 hours of video in mini-dv format is 300 gigs, but then I need room for all of my render files, the scanned depositions, and also room for the quicktime files that I'm going to export out of FCP. On top of that, I need room for the dreamweaver files that are going to link all the quicktime video depositions with their corresponding photo files of the written depositions. Whew! I think that is it...

I was looking online at the G-Tech 500 gig and 800 gig G-RAID and from what I've seen, these appear to be good drives. Has anybody had any experience with these drives? Are the fans very noisy?

wow I hope you are getting decently paid... depositions... wow. I would probably die from boredom (no offense of course).

When storage get to such massive sizes, I would say that noise is not a factor anymore... I mean, its probably going to be unavoidable, anyway, so the minute differences between any given products will be negligable at best. I havent had any experience with any of those, but I am looking into getting one myself... but that will be after I get a good camera and some footage

well, best of luck to ya.

thanks. it is going to be boring, but the pay is going to be good. i agree that at this size of storage noise is something we will have to edure until some new technolgies come out. maybe someday they will have a liquid nitrogen cooled external drive hahaha. hopefully i will be able to use the profits and beef up my mac and start to build an editing suite. i will have to wait on getting a good camera though.

take care.

If you are OK with firewire, go Lacie:

Buy 2 like this and Mirrior Raid them.
Cheap and reliable.
