Does anybody know how to access a hard drive that has been formatted with windows ntfs with a mac osx computer? On the flipside, does anybody know how to access a drive that has been formatted for a mac with a pc running windows xp? Is this even possible?

The first thing you should know is that OS X cannot write to ntfs drives, it can read them though. What I have done in the past is put a friend's HD inan external case so I could back up his files. So either put the drive in a case or directly into your mac.
I am not sure how the reverse works, but I am sure someone else here does.
What exactly are your goals in doing this by the way? That should help the people here narrow their answers.

I'm working on a video project where the workload is being shared between me and a friend. my friend is editing using a pc with avid and i'm using my mac with fcp. once we are both done we need to combine all of our work on both disks. the final format will be quicktime movies. avid has an option to export in quicktime so no problem there. the goal is to have 2 external drives with the exact info on each of them that can be accessed by another computer, but i don't know if this computer will be a mac or a pc. I will need to be able to read and write to both drives. i guess a last resort would be to burn each of our files to dvds and then copy each of them to the other drive, but if there is an easier way i am all ears.
