ok so after looking around for a couple days I found a Fantom 120gb hardrive for $100 with a $20 rebate= $80

http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/de...pno~241751.asp

I know the Lacie d2's are nice but they are twice as much and also weigh at least a pound more and I want a portable hardrive.

Since I couldn't find much user information on the net I was hoping some people could comment about the Fantom Externals.

thanks

I have had that same one since Tiger came out. It appears to work. I have booted from it into both 9.2.2 and Panther. I normally use it to back up 3 Macs. I have no idea if can withstand moving a lot. Mine came with a bracket to enable vertical mounting on a table and I put the bracket away. sam

Hi Sam:

Thanks for the reply, How loud is the drive? I have heard some models are. Also was it difficult to format the drive for a mac, I've never formated a drive before.
Also, I have an ibook 1.33 with firewire 400 which is a 6 pin connection I believe, does the drive connect easily? Thanks again I've found almost nothing about these drives anywhere but the specs look good and so does the price, ohh ya and does it feel durable to you with the aluminum case?

thanks

Sean

Sorry, I made a mistake. I have a Fantom drive which has a durable aluminum case and 2 firewire 400 6 pin connections. It was also quite inexpensive ($100) and is quiet. The leading F confused me as I do not remember names well. sam
