I'm having a weird, but very annoying problem with my Klipsch ProMedia GMX D-5.1 speakers connected to my Dual G5 (optical toslink). The problem is that they are delivering a "bump bump" sound from woofers and other speakers when short sound files like receiving new Mail or emptying trash or when songs change in iTunes (no crossfade). When the sound file is short (like with new mail sound), I actually never hear the new Mail sound - just the hissing bump bump sound, then hissing, the silence again. It appears that when no sound is playing at all, the speakers are off... but when sound starts they turn on or something and give an awful sound. If I hook the Dual G5 to the Klipsch using the analog interface this problem doesn't happen. So it only happens with the optical interface, and only when there is no sound coming out of the system and sounds start... it isn't 100% of the time... sometimes it's very faint, and other times it's very loud. I've tried selecting on the Mac sound prefs optical out and buit-in sound while the speakers are connected via optical and no change.
Currently, I have the optical going to the Dual G5 and the analog going to my AMD64 box (which doesn't have optical) so I can have two systems hooked up at all times (I use the input switch on the Klipsch controller to switch sound between the two systems). Since the Mac is the primary, it's usually set to the optical in from the G5 so when I get new mail or songs switch I get that annoying sound.
Is anyone experiencing anything like this? Any audiophiles out there with suggestions? I don't have an extra optical cable to test, but this was a new $30 monster cable. I suppose I could run the Mac on analog cable and just unplug it when I want to plug the PC in, but I wanted to have the convenience of both being hooked up at the same time...
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance...
