Dear Mac Users,

I've been living in Europe for a while and am at the end of my zone switching abilities for my DVD player. Anybody know how to override it? I think it's ridiculous to have only 4 switches from American to International DVD-playing, and imagine there must be a way around it. Thanks very much for any advice.

Yours,

ChRyder

I believe that VLC will play DVDs from any zone.

www.videolan.org

Just ignore the prompt to change region codes, fire up VLC, and watch the DVD from there.

Because the simplest thing to do when faced with stupid arbitrary limits on your media is to go find a pirated copy that been "set free". Just about all attempts by media publishers to restrict access to our media (usually in the name of preventing piracy) actually encourages piracy since it has NEVER prevented pirates from pirating and only serves to annoy paying customers.

Ironically, it also validates the existence of most software used for pirating, since it is necessary for individuals to take advantage of their fair use rights.

100%

I understand why they use region codes, but they are a pain in the ass and I see no reason why if I move between countries I should have to change regions on my dvd player every time.

The other question:

My stand-alone DVD player cost $40, will play everything (except QT .movs), and is region-free.

My Powerbook cost $3000 and requires me to trick the region code by using VLC to watch DVDs that I didn't buy here...
