iTunes library damaged!?

My mouse and keyboard froze while I was using iTunes, and I had to hit the restart button on my G4...when everything started back up, I had a quick message that said something about "iTunes library XML..." and then it disappeared. A new box popped up saying "creating new library: iTunes 4 music library (damaged)".

Now only 194 of nearly 9,000 songs are in my library, and all my playlists are gone! Is there a way to fix this without manually going through and adding it all back??

Nope. This really sucks when it happens. Always make a backup of your iTunes Music Library file.

You make copies of the iTunes Library and XML files (which are by default in your User folder under Music/iTunes/) and put the copies somewhere safe.

eerie. you need to think about buying a external HD and a backup app or if burning your most important files to cd or dvd every week or more.

backing up will save you pain later on. best of luck.

(ps: If you own .mac there is a new version 3 of theri backup app called Backup. should be the first version not to suck. expect it within 2 months according to the rumors sites.)

Yeah, losing the Library file sucks. Once it has happened a few times you learn to make backup copies. I do it at least once a week myself.

Been running iTunes without having to start all over on my play counts since Jan of '04.

Backup has already given an option to backup iTunes related stuff. You can backup your iTunes playlists, your entire library or just your purchased music.
