I need to convert some .mov files to .mpg (not MPEG4) so that my clients can view the movies on their older PCs. I've tried QuickTime Pro, iMovie HD and Final Cut Express with no success. Am I missing something basic, or is there a utility somewhere that can do this for me? Any pointers would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Maybe this will work.

Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?

QuickTime Pro should do the trick. Open the movie file in QuickTime and click File->Export. Then change the settings to MPG.

The only time when that worked was with Toast 5 installed. Later versions of Toast erased the MPEG VCD export component in favor of encoding from within Toast. FFmpeg or one of the applescript front-ends for it will probably be your best bet, unless you feel like creating a VCD with Toast and then ripping the VCD (ripping VCDs is spotty on OS X). What codecs are used in the mov file you want to convert?

Sure enough. I just assumed QT Pro could export to MPG but I forgot all about that old Toast plugin.
Why do you say ripping VCDs is spotty on OS X? I thought the MPG file was put into the proper directory structure and renamed to .dat or something. Isn't the file unchanged except for the file extension?
