im trying to convert some mov's to avi... seems like there are plenty of things out there to go avi to mov, but not the other way around... is there an easy way to get from mov to avi? or do i have to go a roundabout way through mpeg or something? (and i dont know how to do that either, so if it is the second one, please explain) thanks in advance.

note to moderator: i tried to post this and got an error.. there was nothing to edit or delete and i couldnt even reply with original text... that is why there is apparent double post

There's a nifty Save as AVI plugin that comes with MPEG Streamclip that allows Quicktime to passthrough the audio and video of the mov to an avi file. (You can probably use QTAmateur if you don't have Pro.)

When using the Save as AVI plugin you should be careful because not all video and audio formats are suitable to be put into avi... (AAC for example seems to disappear.)

Yes, because there's nothing like a $700 software package for a small task like that.

Horix, why do you want to do that?

Curious.

open the avi in quicktime then export it to dv then tak ethe dv file and drop it in ffmpeg to use divx ffmpeg. it takes about 10 minutes to save to dv for a 24 minute clip then another 10 to go from dv to avi. the quality is lloks good and decent file size. This was done on a dual 2.5 G5

There is no reason to go to a DV intermediate, and several reasons not to. You want to avoid any unnecessary encoding, and assuming your source movie has AVI-compatible content, Jacke's method involves 0 encoding. (the DV method mentioned has 2 unnecessary encoding steps)

when i record it records as dv and then after chopping out parts i have to connevrt it to dv because when i do it to mov then use mov to avi the encoding fails in ffmpeg.
