I’ve been using Mplayer 1.0pre8 to view wmv video files. Unfortunately, some files will be audio-only (video doesn’t display). Are there any specific codecs that I might need to properly view these?

My Mac is the newest iBook, running OS 10.4.2

I put the file into Quicktime player just to see what happens. After a long wait, a player window opens up, shows text in the video frame that says it was made with Windows Movie Maker 2.1.4026.0, followed by a bunch of code strings below it, as well as terms that are unfamiliar to me. I can probably post up a screenshot of this text if needed.

Those are probably ones made with the wmv3 video codec. There is no open source soolution to play those (yet).

To play them you can use (surprise) Windows Media Player for Mac.

Darn! I was afraid of that. The last time I installed WMP on a Mac, it was a huge download that took up an equally unnecessary chunk of storage space.

Thanks for the reply. If you know of any “bare bones” versions of the WMP for Mac that handle this codec, I'd appreciate to hear of them.

a) Windows Media Player on Mac OS X is harmless. Crap, but harmless. The only things it installs are the application itself and a browser plugin in the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder. You can download it from Microsoft.

b) Try WMV3Server (found it linked on these forums, but haven't tried it yet).
Some info from here:
There is no way to play WMV3 *****INSIDE****** an AVI. That is not WMV3 inside a WMV or an ASF, etc.

WMP9 will NOT play AVIs whatsoever, only ASF, WM, WMA, WMP or WMV. Flip4Mac 1.0.1 will only play WMV3 when inside of any of those containers, NOT when in an AVI.

So stop suggesting things you have not tried or that you do not understand. You are just making the life of other more difficult when they end up thinking it is somehow thier fault that they cannot do what you can with the same tools (when in fact you cannot either).

Things such as WMV3Server ( http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Bay/8128/ ) to convert the thing to ASF (damn easy and free), as dumping the stream with mplayer to another container format (which involves command-line, i.e. tricky), and THEN playing the resulting file WMP9 or Flip4Mac would work.
