Who here has done the following:
-Filmed in HDV
-Edited the footage in SD on a powerbook
-Transfered the FCP doc with HD settings, sans media files, to a powermac and recaptured footage in HD
(?)
From the FCP documentation it sounds like this process is pretty easy, and as I have just discovered this workaround for laptop HD editing, it has opened up a lot of possibilities for me in the near future. (I will be in New Zealand all of december filming, I thought I was going to have to wait to get back to the states before I could begin editing.)
Have any of you done this? Is it relatively easy? Any little pitfalls or workarounds that you have encountered? I think I am going to purchase an older 15" powerbook and maybe a 250-300GB firewire hard drive to use as a scratch disk so I can hook it to my hopefully-here-soon Quad and HD-ify my projects this january when I get back.
Any insight or recomedations, or descriptions of your applicable workflows would be very much appreciated!
(also, What minimum specs would you recommend for a PB to *somewhat-effortlessly* use the final cut studio suite? I'm on a fairly tight budget at this point, the lowest cost, yet headache free solution is all im after, really. )

I do it fairly frequently...the only thing to remember is to punch in the name of the Reel in the Log and Capture window so you re-capture from the correct tape. Type in exactly what your physical tape is labeled. A minimum for FCP Studio would be a 1 Ghz AlBook, but considering you're talking about HD, you may want to shoot for a 1.5Ghz with 128MB RAM and a 5400RPM drive.

hey, thanks guys. I actually have done a bit more research since I made the initial post, and think I have a good workflow pinned down. And yeah, It is clear how important good archiving is going to be!
One more quicky:
Do you have another recomendation for a message board which is a bit better suited to editing on mac? MacNN is great for most things, but responses in the 'creative forums' always seem few and far between.

Try 2-pop.com or creativecow.net, both good places for FCP advice.

I recommend the Apple Discussions for FCP and FCE. These are active and helpful.
Second to this is Ken Stone's site http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage...age_index.html
Full of tips and the active discussion board (bit hard to follow though)
Then there are the 2-pop and Creative cow forums. Full of knowledgeable people, but I personally can't stand their layout and load times:
