I was just reading my Panasonic DVD player/recorder and it says that the unit plays DVD audio.
Not sure exactly what this is. Can I just burn a bunch of MP3 file to a DVD disk and play it on my machine or is something more complicated involved? Is there a special application specifically for DVD audio?
Thanks,
Doug

DVD audio is a surround sound format. Look at the back of your DVD player. It has 6 RCA jacks for 5.1 audio output to a compatible pre-amp or receiver. DVD audio discs are specially marked as such. The format is losing favor and seems to be dying a slow death. The concept is loosely similar to Sony's enhanced bit rate SACD surround sound format.
MP3 is a 'lossy' audio format, entirely different. And yes, you can burn MP3s to a DVD disk and play the audio file back on a compatible DVD player.

I think I have a similar Panasonic DVD player (DVD-S77). The DVD-Audio capabilities take some effort to set up, but it is worth it. Many of the new Dual Disc support the format, including "The Girl in the Other Room" by Diana Krall. Also, if you have a 2004 or newer Acura TL, 2005 or newer Acura RL, or one of the newer Lexuses or Infiniti's, you car might have the ability to play DVD-Audio.
One more thing about Panasonic's DVD players: they definitely play MP3's.

DVD-Audio might actually have been popular if it wasn't for the Byzantine playback prevention built into DVD-Audio discs. Getting the entire collection of your favourite artist on one disc sampled at better-than-CD quality with 5.1 audio sounds like a great idea; too bad they made sure you can't rip it in iTunes, put it on your iPod, or make a back-up copy. The RIAA is dead set on killing all new musical markets, it seems.

That's an excellent point! Also, a person really needs a decent-quality surround sound setup to get the benefits of DVD-Audio or SACD. Since most people seem to listen to music through small ear buds or OEM car speakers, they might not get the benefits. Something else to consider: when given a choice between quality and convenience, people generally choose convenience.
