I'm thinking of getting FCE but I'm worried that it'll be upgraded in January. If I got it before January, and they did upgrade it, I'd be stuck with the old version wouldn't I?
Another question I have is: is there a difference between the version of LiveType included with FCE, and the one with FCP?

The upgrade price is normally pretty good. About 1/3 the price of the full app.
Yes. The version of Livetype with FCE3 is 1.2, with FCP5 it's 2

Oh. What's the difference between versions 1 and 2? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Thanks.

When I bought FCE 2 years ago, it was on sale for $99. Shortly thereafter it was upgraded. I think the upgrade price + the $99 I payed for the older version was about the same as the new version. FYI.

Sorry, I don't have any info on what's new in LiveType2. It's hard to figure it out from the Apple pages. It doesn't look any different. I guess it has more effects, etc. Maybe more livefonts.

Thanks; that's OK. Have you ever used Quartz Composer? I've been using it in conjunction with iMovie with reasonable success. It's basically a developer's interface to the Core Image features. Would you know how that compares with LiveType and Motion? Obviously there aren't as many generators and effects, and the interface is completely different (Quartz Composer is patch-based whereas the Pro apps are time-based). If you haven't used it, it is free on the second OS X install disc if you're interested.

Yeah I've had a look at it, but since I thought it was way complicated compared to Motion I gave it a miss. Main differences I see are the lack of an easy to use graphical interface. You can't obviously just apply a behaviour to an object like you can in Motion. I'm sure filters (colorise, blurs, etc) and stuff are ok. Easy replication? I see there is a Tile effect, but I suppose it's ease of use. I'm sure you can tell me better.
If you are clever enough (like you) and have the time then it might be worth pursueing with QC. I considered it, but thought the money for Motion was worth it.
I'd be interested to see what you can achieve. Could you post anything?

I started with FCE and then went to FCP. I wont make that mistake with another transitional program. If you plan to edit go for FCP, dont waste your time and money on FCE.

Well, if you've got the cash for it, I can't disagree, but there's a fair bit of difference between FCP and FCE.

Any particular reason?

Apart from the stuff FCP has that FCE doesn't (better integration with other FC Studio apps, keyframing filters, Multicam, etc, etc) the main reason I see for going with FCP is that you are getting an app that professionals use and rely on. Therefore bugfixes, etc are more forthcoming, whereas with FCE Apple base it on a stable build of FCP and pretty much just leave it. There isn't as much impetus for them to fix things since it's old technology.

Yes. Final Cut Pro had an update yesterday, I believe.
Unfortunately my budget is insufficiently capacious.

It is possible. I haven't done it, but I know of people that have. However, there are also some that haven't had any success.
You need to follow the techniques here:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/..._old_macs.html
Although that is for getting FCP running on older macs, the same principles apply
