I am hoping someone here can help me out a bit.
I have a copy of DVD Studio Pro (older version, 2.0.5) that I am trying to learn. I want to put together a DVD of highlight clips from my football team.
My question is twofold:
1) Can I make a DVD that will fit an HD TV screen (opposed to the 4:3 screen)
2) For both 4:3 and HDTV (I'm not certain of the Ration) what screen resolution do I need to use for the background image on my menu screen. i.e. I made a test DVD and it looked fine on my mac, but when I put it in a DVD player on a normal TV, part of the image was cut off. I want to know what size I need to make my background image (as well as any other factors to consider such as resolution, RGB vs. CMYK (I am using Photoshop 7 to design my background image)) . Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do you mean widescreen/Anamorphic standard definition or HD which is widescreen anyway?
If you want to do HD, I would assume you would need the latest version of DVD Studio Pro.
With regards to image sizes it depends whether working PAL or NTSC for SD. See if this helps: http://www.fcpbook.com/Pages/PS.html

I am going for normal US Television (which I think is NTSC). I am a little confused by that link you left. If I design it in PhotoShop am I supposed to make it a 720 X 540 or 720 X 480? Also remember I am using DVD Studio Pro 2.0.5, not Final Cut Express (I don't have Final Cut, nor a budget to afford it).
Thank you,

IIRC, standard NTSC DV is 720x480...
If you plan on making an HD-DVD, I think the standards right now are 1080i and 720p. Although thsoe aren't technically HDTV according to ATSC standards, those are the HDV standards and probably what you'd be using.
At any rate, for the SD widescreen, it sounds like you will either be doing letterbox or anamorphic; in either case I would suggest keeping the menu 4:3.
PS HDTV is 16:9 aspect ratio.

Sorry, the link was meant to help! Just because it refers to FCE and FCP doesn't mean you need those packages. It was meant more for the size information and the pixel aspect ratio information, since that's still relevant.
I'm not familiar with DVD Studio Pro, but assumed it would handle images in a similar way.
So for a 4:3 DV NTSC image you'd start with a Photoshop image of 720x540, but distort this to 720x480 to account for the difference between rectangular and square pixels.
For a 16:9 (Anamorphic) DV NTSC image you'd start with 853x480 and distort to 720x480
You also only need to work in RGB. CMYK is for print only.

1) Yes, you can not only capture the movie 16:9 but also mpg2 it and create a widescreen (16:9) DVD.
2) You make two menus, one wide and one not. The not wide is 720x540, then squished to 720x480 to save it out so it look right during the square-non square pixel conversion. It has been over a year, but I think the widescreen should be at 854x480... but don't hold me to that. Google it.
