Can anyone tell me what the best app is for this. Most vids i view online will only play the first half. I have downloaded windows media player 9 and it hasnt seemed to have helped at all.
I have Tiger and Quicktime 7 pro

Your saying the whole vide never plays without pausing and having to buffer some more?

If so then check your Quicktime settings in System Preferences. If it's set to automatic then try setting it manually to a connection speed your using. You can also get an idea of your line speed by doing the broadband test over at http://speakeasy.net .

Well, that's not streaming.

I think Putfile doesn't allow for direct downloads, but go there and then come back and try to download this (hint: option-click on the link): http://x200.putfile.com/videos/b4-11311055966.wmv

Oh I thought online video was streaming?
I downloaded it but I dont have an application to play it in? there is no default application?
Is it because its a WMV file?

If you don't have an application to use it with, how could you watch it? WMV is Windows Media which requires Windows Media Player for Mac, whether it's online or off.

You can read more about streaming media at Wikipedia. You can probably find out more about the difference between streaming and non-streaming written more eluquently than what I can if you use Google.

Windows Media Player for the Mac hasn't streamed properly on my PowerBook for awhile now. It hangs after playing a stream for a few minutes. Try to download WMV files before viewing them.

I try to avoid WMP whenever possible.

You can View -> View Source and search for the actual wmv file to download. Alternatively, you can download the wmv file from Windows -> Activity. Either method will allow you to avoid streaming [downloadable] files.

EDIT: See Jacke's post below on MMS-servers.

(Unless it's actually a streaming file from an MMS-server, in which case you can download it with ASFRecorderX.)

I think it's obvious that you have a magical computer.

Seriously though, you don't have Windows Media Player installed?

Well, you should then be able to play the .wmv file with Windows Media Player. Get info on the file and see if WMP isn't on the list of applications you can use it with.

There is a WMV quicktime component (flip4mac) whose trial restrictions include only parsing the first half of the file. If you have this installed (and not paid for), uninstall it and see if that changes things. If you've paid for it, contact their customer support.

yeah, flip4mac. It's a great product and only $10

If you truly uninstalled it correctly, and you installed WMP correctly, WMP's browser plugin should be playing the file for you (if you don't want to spend $10, this is how you'd watch it)

That with QT Pro, ASFRecorderX (/mmsclient) and WMV3Server and you're pretty much set to save and convert WMV (including wmv3-in-AVI).
