hi all. i have a bunch of dvd's that i want to duplicate onto a dvd-r. i know very little about this, so can you direct me to a forum or site that i can learn how to do this best?

as i understand it, you can't duplicate audio quality for dts and dd video, which is fine. i want to duplicate stuff like snowboarding dvd's i have so i can pack them up for snowboarding trips, etc. and not worry about the originals. i would, however, like to maintain the best quality i can so the soundtracks are good and the resolution plays on any television.

ultimately, i will convert these to stream to different rooms in my house too, but i am not sure what is the best format to rip them to.

i guess i am looking for the best software to duplicate the dvd's and also a recommendation on what format i should rip them as.

thanks for the help.

If you want to simply rip them and then burn them you'll need a ripping program like MacTheRipper or DVDbackup. These programs will allow you to remove data from a commercial/encoded disk. After this step, if the DVD is small enough to fit on a DVD-R you can simply burn it using a program like toast. If the DVD rip is larger than a DVD-R disk than you need a program like DVD2ONE that will allow you to either extract the movie track only, or use the whole disk, compressing as necessary so what you want fits on a DVD-R. This is then burnt in the same way using something like toast. There's a ton of articles on the web about using such programs. Google searches like "how to use DVD2ONE" or "mac DVD ripping" etc should turn up some good results.

As far as what format, just rip them as the normal DVD format, compress as needed, and then burn. As far as streaming, I'm not sure, someone else will have to touch on that - not my game.
