When burning "main feature" the format gets messed up.

I recently bought Toast 7 and tried backing up a few of my movies. I use MTR to rip to my hard drive. Normally I burn all features so it's compressed a bit (using single layer dvd) but everything is on the disk. For the heck of it I chose to burn the main feature only of a film in Toast 7. There's a lot less compression and I hardly ever watch the special features more than once. That said I figured this is a nice way to go. But, even though is says "Main Feature, format 16x9 x:xx:xx" it doesn't seem to format the picture the way it should be. On a 4:3 tv it is not matted (black bars on top and bottom of the screen). And a good amount of the picture is not viewable. On my 16:9 tv, more of the original picture is viewable but I've noticed text getting chopped off.

What can I do to fix this issue, if there is a fix? I normally just use the "make dvd using video_ts folder" option. Again, when I burn the entire disk (menus, special features, etc..) it is just like the original in regards to format. However, when I burn just the main feature things get a bit messed up.

Not sure why this is happening, but it sounds like Toast is somehow changing the widescreen flag when it extracts the main feature. Until you figure out why this is happening, a work-around would be to use Toast to create a disk image of the feature only. Then copy the VIDEO_TS folder from that image back to your hard drive. Next, use MyDVDEdit (free ware) to open up that folder and set the flag (it's under "IFO") on the main title set to "16:9 auto letterbox." Save the changes and now use Toast to burn this VIDEO_TS to disk and the aspect ratio should be fine.

Thanks you Spoffo! I'll give that a try next time I burn a disk.

Ok, well I tried the disk image/MyDVDEdit route and I think I see the problem. When I look under IFO it has it as Pan-Scan/Letter box. The problem is, when I try to save it as auto letterbox it won't let me. MyDVDEdit is saying the Video_TS files are read only. They were at first, but even after going to "get info" and changing it to "read/write" the problem persists. I just don't get it. Now I see the issue and I still can't fix it with the work around.

I'm starting to hate Toast because of this. There's one other person I've found that has the same problem and he/she hasn't found much info about this either. Why would it work fine for so many but not a couple of people? It's a store bought, legal copy and it's registered. It's updated to 7.0.2 and after all that you'd think it'd work. Everything else works fine, just not the "Main Movie" burn. Somewhere with-in the software it's not tagging it as auto letterbox, but as "pan scan/letterbox". The funny thing is it plays fine, and in the correct 16:9 format through DVD player on my powerbook. When it comes to the set top player it's cropped. Could it possibly be an issue with the set-top dvd player? It's a few years old now. Maybe it's missing a feature that would play it in the correct aspect ratio? Sorry if things sound vague. It's only because I really don't know a whole lot about this stuff.

MTR gives you a VIDEO_TS folder right? Just burn that in Toast as data/UDF (not in the Video pane). It will be identical to the original, except for copy protection.

I'll give that a try, thanks! One thing about that is the last time I extracted the main title using MTR it wasn't burnable through Toast. But then again I was trying to use the "burn Video_TS to DVD" option. Hopefully what you suggested will be the fix for my issue.

Thanks again.

Uncle Skeleton,

I'm willing to bet that would have worked. My only problem is the file is 4.52 GB and I can't compress using the UDF way of burning. This is just too much of a pain in the ass.

Well, I bought Toast 7 knowing it had built in compression. I was going to buy popcorn but I got toast instead. Oh well, I'm not buying popcorn so I'm out of luck. Of course if Toast 7 worked the way it should I wouldn't even have to consider all these run-around ways.
