Can i use a split screen thing with imovie? have one shot on one side and a differnt shot on the other side...and how would i do this?

I don't think there are any free plugins available. You'd have to look to buy one.

You could also do this with Quicktime Pro. It is not nearly as "clean" as the stuff you can do with iMovie, but, it could be done.

I also think Gee Three has some split screen addins that you can buy fairly cheaply. Check them out here...

The Slick Vol. 4 pack has a split screen add in that may work the way you need.

For a free solution, consider Quartz Composer. If you have Tiger, install the Developer Tools from the second disc. In the /Developer folder (I think), you'll find Quartz Composer. Just drag two movie files from the Finder to a blank project. If you take some time to learn how to use it, you could get some good split screen effects. You can then just drag the .qtz file from the Finder into iMovie and it will import, ready to use.
