Hi guys,

I need to make some copies of a concert CD for a singing group I'm in. I thought it would be easy, but maybe I'm missing something! I need to preserve the high audio quality and track divisions.

I copied the CD to a file on my desktop and tried burning it to a CD, but it doesn't play. If I copy the files to iTunes and burn them, they'll be lower quality, right? Any ideas?

Thank you!

You will only lose quality if you encode them. Just import and burn.

In the preferences for iTunes you'll find the option for importing under their advanced section. Choose the best quality import option, then import the music. Select the album and choose burn (and a preference option for burning is to burn an audio CD (not mp3 audio or data in your case).

Your other option is to open Disk Utility and save the audio cd as a disc image (this will be the identical copy of the audio CD, but will be a little trickier to figure out. Once you have the disc image, then you can burn from the image using the disc utility.

Most of the import options are going to have some compression, which is tossing some info but not enough for most people to notice if you use the highest quality options. Apple does have a lossless encoding method. You may wish to use that for your import.

NOTE: the default for iTunes does include compression in importing.

I actually tried this, but could only find options for creating a new empty image or an image of a hard-drive. When I selected the CD the option for making an image of it was greyed out. (I'm on 10.3, btw.)

Select the actual session for the disc and you should be able to make an image from that. The option is grayed out if you don't have the proper item selected. Its really the best option for as exact a duplicate as possible.
