hey guys,

I'm pretty new to FCE. I edit for a class at school and I'm going to take Film Production in college. But I'm still pretty clueless...

1. I was wondering, how do you record an Sequence back to tape/camera?

I know you can in iMovie, you can record your whole timeline and everything right back to the tape. I could use iMovie to do this, but it'd be much easier if I just knew how to do it in FCE

2. How do I kill the video track of a clip so I'm just left with the audio? Right now I just lower the opacity to 0% and put it over the existing track.

I need to know this because sometimes we don't mic something, then we go back later and mic the sound effects to put in. There has to be an easier/cleaner way of just extracting the audio and ditching the video track.

3. Sometimes FCE won't let me add a certain transition in at all. Anyone know why?

Each clip is certainly long enough. But I get some sort of error every once in awhile and it's annoying. I either have to use a diff transition or none at all.

Thanks a lot. I know i kind of rambled, but that's my nature. Any help is good

Also, any good sites for FCE/Camera beginners to learn more?

I use Final Cut Pro and I know the two programs are very similar, but I don't want to explain something that might not be part of FCE and confuse you even more! Just understand that there are MANY ways to these tasks in Final Cut Pro...you will have to use whichever one suits you the best.

1. Try exporting your sequence (your edited footage) back to your camera. If you can see it on the camera, hit record! (The command to view video externally in FCP is Cmd-F12. Might be the same for Express)

....is great for Final Cut related questions.

Ken Stone runs a website that has lots of articles and links for Final Cut users.

1. Use the Print to Tape-feature
2. Lock the sound-portion of the track, select the video track and hit delete
3. That could be because the clip is too short, that it's a transition that requires two separate tracks, etc. etc.

erik is on the money. Print to tape, lock the audio track and delete the video. Also, remember that most transistions require a clip that has been trimmed..so it will still have a couple seconds of (non-visible) video on the end which is uses to create the transition.

Anyone heard anything about FCX updates? Now that FCP is only available as a bundle, I think FCX is going to be getting much more attention.

WTF? Where did the rest of my post go?

....continued

2. You can also hold the option key and select a track. Holding the option key disables linked selection, and will allow you to select only the video or audio tracks. You can also turn off linked selection by pressing Shift-L or clicking the little button that looks like a band-aid in the top right of your timeline.

3. This sounds like your clips dont have handles. A handle is extra footage that exists before or after your In and Out points, respectively. If you put your In and Out points at or near the end of the clips, your transitions are going to have little footage to work with.
I would try moving your points around and see if that allows the transition to happen.
