I recently bought a new G5 iMac. It is a 1.9 GHz Power PC processor (not the new Intel Duo chip set) with 1.5 GB of RAM, and a 250 GB hard drive. I successfully installed the drivers for my Tascam US-122 USB interface, and plowed ahead. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.4.

When I first launched GarageBand, I hooked up my USB interface, and quickly recorded a test vocal track with no problems what-so-ever. I used the right input on my interface, and used the Channel 2 input source on my real instrument vocal track. It worked like a charm.

2 days later, I fired it up again, and got nothing. I can not get the Real Instrument vocal track to receive a signal from my mic / interface. My signal path is pretty simple:

SM-57 mic into an ART TPS II tube preamp, then into my Tascam US-122 USB interface, then straight into the USB port. I am getting a signal at the preamp, and the interface. I even tried unplugging the interface and hooking it up to my G3 with Pro Tools Free (I wanted to make sure the output on my interface was still working). It worked fine in Pro Tools. When I go back to the G5 with Garageband, I get no signal. Anybody have a clue to what might be happening here? Below is a link to some screen captures of the various control panes. It is interesting that the "Devise is Online" and master volume sliders are greyed out. Should I try re-installing the US-122 drivers? Thanks for any help. I'm really frustrated and preplexed.

I can't access the screenshot to see what it is, but a mistake I often make is I forget to switch from the internal mic to the line-in in the System prefs -> Sound settings. So, open the System prefs and have a look around the sound settings.

Yep, been there done that. There are several control panel panes I check:

1. US-122 Manager App (To make sure my USB interface is activated
2. Audio/Midi Utility App (verify that the iMac recognizes my interface)
3. System Preferences/Sound (toggle the input to the USB interface (I don't use the built-in mic). BTW, I can get a signal into the vocal track using the built-in mic no problem)
4. GarageBand Preferences (change the input source from built-in to the USB buss for the interface)

I've tried dumping preferences and relaunching. I even tried activating another administrative user to use a fresh set of user preferences. So far, nothing has worked. I'm perplexed. I had no problem recording a vocal track through my interface the first time I fired it up. My next step will probably be to trash my interface drivers, and then re-install them.

My link to the picture works for me. It should just launch a new browser window and display the image I hosted on Comcast.

All is good now. All I needed was the latest drivers update from the Tascam web site for Mac OS X 10.3/10.4. I'm up and running now.
