I am thinking to buy a RAID system from LaCie.
Anyone has one?
Or what kind of external HDDs do you have to Edit?

RAID is a good idea for professional video editing needs.
Personally I use a standard Maxtor 250GB HDD in an Icy Box Firewire enclosure from RaidSonic. I've had no experience with Lacie drives themselves, but I had trouble finding availability for their Firewire drives when I was shopping around.
/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility can set up RAIDs.

Here is an awesome deal.
Seagate external Firewire/USB 2.0 300GB for $149 (after rebate):
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4283904
I already have one of these drives and am buying another.
I love it. It has dual Firewire (400) ports so you don't lose a port when you plug it in. And it has a USB 2.0 port for future compatibility and Windows compatibility.
It has a sleep mode completely independent of your computer's sleep. It spins down after a certain amount of time of inactivity and automatically spins back up if you go to use it. Meanwhile, the second Firewire port still works even if the drive is spun down.
Very cool. Nicely engineered. Good looking, too.

I use a LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme - 1TB is storage, pretty sweet. I like the fact it has USB, FW 400 and FW 800, though I do have a few gripes:
You can't plug 2 Macs into it at the same time (eg using one with FW 400 and one with 800)
ITS VERY NOISY!!! Its over twice as loud as the PowerMac G5 1.8 Single Proc I use it with!
Its amazing how quickly 1 TB of storage gets used! The drive is currently at 200 GB free space after one year. hehe

This price sound sweeeet! ;o)
LaCie drives have the same fonctionalities + they do Firmware updates when needed.
I and my editing friends only run LaCie. Cheap and as far as I know incredibly reliable!
Regarding the Windows compatibility, you know that a Mac formated HD will not be recognised by a Windows machine, right?

Thanks for your input! :o)
Regarding the 2 macs to 1 disc, I saw this setup somewhere... I never needed it myself so I don t know how the guy has done it but it looked pretty straight forward.
Then, all the discs are noisy, it is probably due to the small box they are in. The solution is to stack them in a "kill that noise" home made box. I am using a long FW cable and dropped all my HDs in a large drawer in a cabinet, et voilĂ ! :oD

Aha, I guess I could try that, only problem is I forgot to mention is that the noise is not from the actual spinning of the hard drives (or which there are 4 physical drives in the LaCie bigger Disk), but from the noise of the fan inside the drive, so i don't know if locking it away in a cupboard would effect possible heat issues.
