I have a video file that is in a wmv format. I want to use part of it for a project I'm doing, but iMovie cannot import it and Quicktime Player can't export it into anything. How can I convert this footage into anything else?

no, QT doesn't support that format....
have a look at www.flip4mac.com
to my knwoledge they are the only one to offer any workable solution to handle that....

Plan B)
in case you own Snapz form Ambrosia, get for free the windowsplayer and "record" the stuff while playing.... ;-)

I have Flip4Mac and it plays the file but won't export it.

I'll try the demo version of Snapz and see if it works. I don't want to buy it cause this is just a one time thing. Anyone know of any Windows programs that will let me do this? I have a good Windows computer too.

edit: Snapz worked. Thanks!

Flip4Mac will export it if you pay the small fee to upgrade to version that exports.

Another thought is that you might be able to convert it from one format to
another by using ffmpegX.

Search for ffmpegX and install it. It is quite complicated if you have never
used it.

There are some WMV files that refuse to convert because they were encoded
so weirdly on the PC (codecs that don't really match).

Good luck.
