Is there a Mac OS-X program that can read parameters of an audio file without opening the file? I'd like to verify codec type, stereo/mono, number of samples, and sample rate without time-consuming opening of an audio edit program.
There is a PC program called AudioIdentifier that may do this - I'm not sure.
There is a context-menu tool that does it, for mp3 only.
How difficult would it be to do with an Applescript?

well, depending on what you mean by "without opening", iTunes gives you many info by selecting a title and then Apple-I (bitrates, etc)....
so, you NEED to import your files into iTunes, but you don't have to play (=open) them ..

this is not exactly, what you want, hmmm ?
